ICEAGE (DK / Matador)

iceage photo klein
Plowing into the Field of Love is the third album from Copenhagen’s ICEAGE. It is new, bold and forceful.

Channeling the rage and emotion of their tempestuous early releases into finely honed musicianship, Plowing Into The Field of Love features piano, mandolin, viola and organ atop Johan Suurballe-Wieth’s razor-sharp guitars and the lolloping, synchronized rhythm section of Jacob Tvilling Pless and Dan Kjær Nielsen. The record has a clear, uncompressed sound, and Elias Bender Rønnenfelt’s desperate vocals are out front, nakedly accountable for the words.

At the other extreme, the album tends to a sort of euphoria, especially in the unexpectedly upbeat country number “The Lord’s Favorite,” and even humor. Yet desperation and loss lurks behind. This is an album about seeing, learning, and rejecting things, in a cycle that repeats and builds. The reference points are wildly varied – on a recent German radio show, the band played records by Abner Jay, Rowland S. Howard, Brian Eno, and Coil – but the sound is uniquely and darkly Iceage.

HELM (UK / Pan)

Helm is Luke Younger, a sound artist and experimental musician based in London, working with a vast array of revolving instrumentation and abstract sound sources. Younger’s compositions build dense aural landscapes that incorporate elements of musique concrete and industrial music alongside hallucinatory drones and various acousmatic phenomena. Instruments morph into spectral rust, a shimmering klang swims alongside passive noise and the relationship between acoustic and electronic derived sounds forms a solid foundation.
To date, he has produced three full length albums; the self-released debut To An End, in 2010, Cryptography on Graham Lambkin’s (The Shadow Ring) KYE label in 2011 and 2012′s Impossible Symmetry beginning an ongoing collaboration with Bill Kouligas’ PAN label. 2013 and 2014 saw the release of two new EPs, Silencer and The Hollow Organ which were both well received by press and fans alike. Helm has developed an increasingly busy worldwide touring schedule also, sharing stages with artists as diverse and disparate as William Basinski, Destruction Unit, Cut Hands, Joe Colley, Amen Dunes, The Haters, Wild Classical Music Ensemble, Oneohtrix Point Never, Iceage, Tony Conrad, Terror Danjah, HTRK, Lee Gamble, Kevin Drumm and many more.

TY SEGALL (L.A. / Drag City)

Ty Segall pic by Annabel Mehran

San Francisco psych wunderkind Ty Segall continues a tireless musical assault on ears and minds. Over the past years he’s released records more often than most people do laundry, thrown himself in with the likes of Thee Oh Sees, White Fence and Mikal Cronin. 2012 saw two things of what TY does best: thick riffs on ‘Slaughtherhouse’ (In The Red) and deep psyche garage on his collab with White Fence ‘Hair’ (Drag City).
Ty Segall grew up in the sunny surf of Orange Country California’s Laguna Beach where he spent his young days studying, surfing, and listing to the Beach Boys, the Misfits, and Black Sabbath. Ty knew he had to get away from the sun in order to truly appreciate it, so he moved up north to the port of San Francisco and was amazed at how cold it was. Despite this fact, he found a new appreciation for psychedelic music and decided that he would give it a shot. Ty played in the Traditional Fools, Party Fowl, The Epsilons, Sic Alps, and The Perverts. After meeting friend John Dwyer of Oh Sees fame, he was lucky enough to release a solo record on Dwyers Castle Face…the story began…

J.C. SATÀN (Bordeaux / Trouble In Mind, Slovenly)

JC SATAN pic taken from la route du rock

Already a cult sensation in their hometown of Bordeaux, French band J.C. Satan have been doling out their brain-busting, caffeine-soaked, death rattle since 2009 coaxing three albums & numerous singles onto our unsuspecting turntables. This single marks their debut for Trouble In Mind, & picks up right where their 2012 album “Faraway Land” left off, enveloping the listener in the band’s black-robed, denim-decked coven of noise.
