WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT A FESTIVAL IN ATHENS?
With Autumn upon us, the european Summerfestival-Season is over and people are already getting excited about the first line-ups to be announced for 2016 to pick the next crazy destination so they can enjoy all their favorite bands outside the regular club-context.
Whats not to love about that?
For a festival-goer, nothing. As a booking agent, also, I find the festival season exciting. I get to see which bands will be the ones breaking thru next year and appearing on big stages all over Europe. For sure we at Eine Welt aus Hack are not the biggest player in this (sometimes really unfair) game, and we cant win the endless fight against bigger agencies, bigger acts and Agents who have more influence on recent music and its development only because they represent bands that we know as headliners, but we have our bands playing festivals, smaller ones and bigger ones. We are keeping our eyes open for new festivals, new ideas and structures and we are happy that there is still so much enthusiasm and good taste to be found in today’s festival scene.
In the winter of 2010 a new festival was born in Athens, Greece. Since that first edition they have hosted 8 festival-events (they’ve already announced Plissken 2016, in fact. “Bigger, better, stronger”). They also host several clubshows in Athens, with outstanding line-ups and great artists from all over the world. They have been forging a great path as a great festival.
2014 was the first time they replied to my e-mails and the first time I had the chance to work with them and as a result had some bands confirmed for Plissken Festival 2015. The whole Festival Team has been really helpful and friendly, the bands and me have been looking forward to an exciting performance among other great artist.
As a person that tries to catch up with the news everyday I was well aware of Greece’s financial situation, and I was, of course, worried about how the shit could go down for the bands I had booked. A part of their guarantees got used to book their flights down to Athens, and a small balance got payed to one Band on the festival. However, the bigger fee was supposed to be wired on the first working day after the Festival. Its common that this sometimes is not happening in time, and that you have to wait a little longer, so I got in touch with Stefanos (Booking-Head of the Plissken Festival) he told me that the Festival was a loss, and that he is currently figuring out how to pay everyone and that he will be in touch about things. I wrote him back saying that Im sorry to hear it was a loss, and told him that he managed to book a outstanding line up, and that I hope he continues doing the Festival and was trying to give him a good vibe, we have been in the same situation a few years back when we did our own Festival “Teenitus” in Berlin, all Bands got payed and we were prepared for a loss so there was no reason for not paying anyone in time, but I wanted to give him this time, also facing the fact that Greece’s financial Situation got even worse and the Government established cash control, so they were basically unable to send money as a wire.
If you ever gave a bigger chunk of $$$ to someone who promises to pay you back as soon as he can, you would feel really good if this person would just give you an update on the status every now and then, Even if he can’t pay. Something. At the end of the day, yes, it’s only money. But if you have lost faith that someone is being honest with you AND that money may be gone…forever? It’s a real shit situation.
So, since July 2015 – no more replies from Stefanos. Mid July The friendly production person got in touch with me, saying that she just heard of whats up. She said she is sorry and that she’s not working for Plissken anymore, but she will try and get in touch with Stefanos.
Of course Cash Control was still in effect, and I needed to sit still and just wait. (You can imagine what happens if you take this thing to a lawyer. They will tell you a lot of what you already know and then you have to pay them as well). Yet, I found out that there is way’s to transfer money outside of Greece . It’s not easy but it is possible. So I reached out yet again to Stefanos. Still nothing.
I know there is nothing new with artists not getting paid. It happens all the time, and it is a risk in my line of work. It’s just sad that Plissken Festival is joining the ranks of people and organizations that screw over smaller artists. But why? Why do the smaller artists, and those that work with and for them, have to lose?
I’m not that kind of Agent that books 8 tours a year and can only live from that. I work with smaller and unknown artists so they can reach more people and people can discover them, not to get rich. But everyone has a bottom line of trying to survive. It’s a shame they have chosen to place such little importance on honoring ALL of their business commitments, because now I am in jeopardy of not meeting my bottom line.
